i was going to respond to gnomad's post last night....but life got the better of me.

so now that i'm at work, and life's waiting for me at home, i'll respond with my little comment...

"And another thing, I really don't believe that people dictate what's popular... the media does."

that is a very true statement, but it also not...

the media, in large, is responsible for what we hear over the airwaves, and due to that, they are responsible for what is popular, because they are in charge of the play lists and the majority of americans don't seek out music beyond what's easily accessible to them....

however, the djs/program directors may know of something new, different, and better(?), but because of a small group of americans (the unmorally moral, & the easiliy offended...but i repeat myself) new and interesting, maybe even thought inducing or provocative music and tv shows won't be aired for fear that Ms. Christianity will be mildly offended and complain to the FCC, who sympathsizes with her and fines the radio/tv station because they're afraid that if they don't, then she won't buy mop-n-glow from their advertisers....

    it's fucked.

I think along with The Music Industry and record major record companies the FCC has to be in my top 5 hated things in the world. Good news though, I was watching either Colbert Report of Daily Show and they said that in 2004 there were over 2 mil complaints to the FCC about offensive material in the media, and in 2005 there were only 200,000. Either that means that people are finally learning to relax, or just that the FCC has extended its Nazi power over media and has done its satanic job of keeping out entertaining media outlets.

Back on subject, THERE IS HOPE TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE.

I did a report a while ago on the pattern of music throughout history, and in my research my Electronic Music and Recording Arts Prof told me and showed me a book that explains about a pattern that happens throughout history.
Music and the development of creativity goes through stages of simplicity and complexity throughout time that are in a neverending circle. The pattern has been going on since music was discovered and can last in periods of time as short as a decade or as long as a century or more. For example, Before Mozart and Beethove, classical music had relatively simple compositions. Then they came along and completely redifined music and made it so much more complex. Then after them the Romantic times came and music got simpler, then came 20th century comositions where music got the most complex its been. The same pattern has happened with Rock. In its infancy Rock was very simple, then in the 60's got more complicated, then in the 70's reached its pinnacle, only to get simpler with 80's rock, have a small reamurgence in the early 90's then reach what I believe is its alltime low. If history is any sort of guide and will repeat itself, then somewhere, hopefully soon, we'll be seeing more complicated music (I honestly with club hip-hop and whats on the radio don't see music getting much simpler). I just believe that theres going to have to be something, whether it is an event, a band, a person, an invention, or anything else that will spark people interest in listening and creating more complex music. But then again, this might not happen as a result of the growth of marketing and commercialism that hasn't been in the past.
What do you guys think? Do you think this theory is bs? And any ideas as to what could spark some new great music that people all over will listen to?

The decline in complaints is because people are scared of the fines now and either check with the FCC before airing ANYTHING or just don't air it if they think there might be a chance at getting a fine.
