Re: Mega Music Discovery & Recommendation Thread (Mmmm,

    Band Name: Secret & Whisper

    Location: Kelowna, BC, CA
    Genres: Rock/Alternative/Punk
For Fans Of: Stutterfly, Underoath, Kaddisfly
    Label: Tooth & Nail

    Band Links: MySpace | PureVolume

    Recommended Song(s): "XOXOXO" "Vanishings"

The Takeaway: From the ashes of Stutterfly comes a much more interesting and engaging band. Officially signing to Tooth & Nail in mid-December 2007, they have already generated a ton of buzz about their forthcoming album, due out February 12, 2008. The demo songs that are available on their MySpace and PureVolume pages are amazing, certainly far more interesting than anything else the genre is offering these days.

    Added after 14 minutes:

    Band Name: The Rosebuds

    Location: Raleigh, NC
    Genres: Rock/Indie/Pop
For Fans Of: Interpol, Feist, Modest Mouse
    Label: Merge Records

Band Links: MySpace | ReverbNation | Official Site

Recommended Song(s): "I Better Run" "When The Lights Went Dim" "Get Up Get Out"

The Takeaway: Departure from the stuff I'd normally recommend, but there's something really good about these guys.  The darker edge of their newer album hits the same nerves that a lot of the Nick Cave and Peter Murphy songs I like hit as well.

      Band Name: Confuse

      Location: St. Austell, Cornwall, UK
Genres:  Rock / Ambient / Metal
For Fans Of: My Vitriol, Oceansize, Kaddisfly
      Label: unsigned

      Band Links: MySpace |

      Recommended Song(s): "Roses" "Headaches" "Stars"

The Takeaway: They're actually really good, putting the friendship part aside. Musically its brilliant and the songs have a cutting-edge quality over all the other Cornish rock bands. Live, they're mind blowing, they're tight and it brings the songs to a whole new level.

      Band Name: I Say Marvin

      Location: Brighton/Cornwall, UK
Genres:  Emotronic / Pop / Indie
For Fans Of: Hadoken, !!!, The Automatic
      Label: ????

      Band Links: MySpace

      Recommended Song(s): "EditSelect" "Whale Song"

The Takeaway: Well, i haven't checked these guys out live in a while. Live, they used to go berserk, throwing themselves into drum kits, destroying equipment, funny banter and overall you walk away satisfied you've watched them and want more. I can imagine that's all toned down abit since having a manager now... and lots of label attention. So we'll see...

      Band Name: Arty Karate

      Location: Brighton, UK
Genres:  Garage / Indie / Rock
For Fans Of: Death From Above..., Biffy Clyro, We Are Scientists.
      Label: unsigned

      Band Links: MySpace

Recommended Song(s): "Forget yourself" "For One Night Only"

The Takeaway: Ok, so on record you just think, these guys are just making some catchy songs etc etc. Right? Ok... well, live it get dirty. Bass, distortion, nothing stops it, it's dirtier than Paul McCartney's break-up, DIRTY.

            Band Name: Kárin Tatoyan

            Location: Los Angeles, CA, U.S.
Genres: Electronica / Rock / Alternative
For Fans Of: Bjork, Ani Difranco

Band Links: MySpace, my site will have 2 shows up soon

Recommended Song(s): "Well Beyond a Grave" "Radio Cures"

The Takeaway:Seeing her live is breathtaking. Her band consists of 2 other musicians which hold their ground live. Kárin's vocals are haunting. They way I describe her to friends is that she's a Armenian version of a darker Bjork. The songs are brooding and haunting.

darshun added 11 Minutes and 8 Seconds later...

            Band Name: Sonomaris

            Location: Los Angeles, CA, U.S.
Genres: Rock / Melodramatic Popular Song / Japanese Classic Music (this is on myspace), MY interpretation of genre is: Progressive Rock, Rock, Metal
For Fans Of: TOOL, Feersum Ennjin, Failure

            Band Links: MySpace

            Recommended Song(s): "Flourish" "The Sun"

The Takeaway: I personally know the guitarist, Tyrone, from being in a band w/him. Originally he was an outstanding bass player, but he's graduated to guitar which he's been playing as long as he's been playing the bass. Armed w/an armada of pedals (& no pedal board yet!!!), he layers and textures his sound w/the backing of another friend, Rick on drums. Bass is now played by Zac (who's 1st name is Rick, so we had to rename him) who recently entered the fold and Jerry sings w/passion and soul. They may be playing their 1st show in late March, so look out for a quality bootleg from me...

The Takeaway: A powertrio of grand measures, virtuosos of producing as well as mastery of their respective instruments. *Shared the stage with Shiner & Queens of the Stone age (not on a nat'l tour, but just an opening act). *They've released 4 full length CDs in a span of 6 years and an assortment of eps. They disbanded in 2004 after touring really hard on their own.
Is it Warofsound that's also a fan of Houston??? Well, Hal Scanlon has crept up and Jeff Halland is going to be releasing possibly 6 volumes of his solo stuff:

Hal Scanlon, aka Jeff Halland formerly of the seminal Minneapolis, MN based independent rock trio known as 'Houston', finally gives the world more of the inspiring genius that lives and breathes within him in the form of audio recordings that will satisfy depths you didn't know existed.

I just had to bump this so that I could remember it. For fans of Hum? That's me. I can do without SP, but that's because Billy Corgan should have his vocal chords ripped out so that he can never sing again. Their "music" is pretty good, though.
I don't have the time it takes to recover from the day
I sit and moan and mope and groan and never have my say
A crown of thorns from which is born a little baby bird
To fly away and have its day is nothing but absurd
