Slightly off-topic, I think, but yeah.
i can respect this. i never said listen to everything, but don't just listened to the big five.

Honestly, the list was kind of an experiment. It was a successful one, because it showed me exactly why those lists we see in magazines are so full of crap and why our list, while slightly less shitty, was still not great. You can't please everyone, and when you try, this is what you get. Most of us had albums we were just stunned didn't make it, and the rest had pretty much their entire list obliterated from the gate. That list was honestly the best we could do, and I think as a board, we all feel we have better taste in music than Rolling Stone or whatever other "music" magazines are out there.

This is true. You never said that. And these are just my personal opinions, I'm not expecting to convince or hold anyone to a standard... but like most genres of music, there isn't a need to delve further. It all just becomes the same exact sound. Rock, Pop, Punk, Metal, Prog... once you get about 3 levels deep into any genre, you notice the similarities, then the sickening truth that this is all the same. I couldn't tolerate it after a while. Personally, I feel that if something is worth listening to, it'll rise to the surface. The real experimental stuff, though, doesn't fit into genres. It doesn't exactly transcend them, but it's like putting a square peg in a round hole. And most people here don't listen to those bands. Shit, I don't...

So, in trying to prove some off-beat point, I just realized I agree with you, but not for the same reasons... heh.

while i agree with you that it is levels of degree, your arguments brings into the notion of relativity. why this becomes important is that while your previous example that the musical diversity of the dredg board is more impressive than that of the offspring board, coming from a few post-rock and indie boards, the musical diversity of dredg's board is more limited than these other boards. now, i would love for the musical horizons of this board to expand, and i have no problem with some of the more recondite artists enjoying exposure and notability on this board, it just ain't happening. maybe it will. it isn't right now. it is more of a dream at this point.
        You're touching on my point:

If we were sitting in the offspring boards right now and somebody called the offtopic board a posty/proggy board, I'm sure there would be lots of: "??? eh?"'s. But saying that here ISN'T a stretch of the imagination by any means. I'll concede, it may not be as posty as Sigur Ros's or as proggy as Dream Theater's (using big names on purpose), and we're probably more proggy than posty (since dredg is), but it's not wrong to observe that we lean toward post/prog as dsv said.

Now, that said, we've kinda moved on, and I agree with Gnomad to an extent. Once the "royalty" of a genre have been established, it sometimes gets tough to go deeper because things are already starting to become old news. And I'm sure we'd all agree that at that point we tend to shift to another similar genre if the old one has become stagnant.

Everyone has their myriad reasons for liking what they like. I can easily say that the vast majority of music recommendations or lists that I see here are uninteresting to me (and sometimes downright shitty), it doesn't mean it's not my number 1 place on the interwebs to find new bands to listen to. But they have to be in my goldilocks zone, that has nothing to do with obscurity, only the quality standards I have in place.

Wow. I didn't mean for my mention of this board being "post-rock" to turn into a big heated debate, LoL...afterall, the words were colored...in this case, "Deep Sky Blue"...when I do that, it usually means that I'm in a light-hearted mood or/and am trying to be funny. If the words were white, it would've meant I was being more serious. That being said, I enjoyed reading the seriousness. T'was a nice change.

And if '93 Anthrax is old-fogie metal these days, then that's fine by me...doesn't change the fact that I'm proud as fuck to be a fan.

PS: I was gonna say Opeth sucks, but then I realized I've never given them the fair chance that they probably deserve. Someone tell me what their best song is and I'll check it out.
