I don't think the mainstream has anything to do with it.  The first album was written throughout a longer period of time.  The 2nd album was written fairly quickly.  Sure, there was a 3 year gap in between the two albums, but Jared also has to keep up with his acting career.

It doesn't matter though...

That is the way of the industy.  I think they lost a lot of that spaced out trippy element that I liked so much from their first album but there was still enough of it for me to kinda like their second album.
