  • Albuquerque Show 6-7-05 Review and News

Note: this is my same posting from the "Albuquerque show tomorrow night" post, but I figured I would post it separately here so that people knew where to find the review. It also has some news that people will find interesting, I'm sure...

Just got back from the show. Astounding.

My friends and I went to eat at a nice place called Tucano's around 1:00 and then drove by the venue around 2:30ish. Apparently the band had already arrived but were out and about, so we just drove around and saw Dino at one point walking by himself in the middle of Downtown Albuquerque. We shouted out Dredg and waved at him and he smiled and waved back.

I had about 13 friends meet up with me total, but my friend Brandon and I went alone back to the venue around 4:30. I had bought a bottle of Jagermeister and just wanted to get it to the band, but Rodney ended up letting us come in and just chill for a while. Talked with Circa Survive and the Pale Pacific; no matter what anyone says, these guys are SO nice, outgoing, and VERY appreciative of fans. I was highly impressed with their attitudes. More on their performance later.

Anyway, around this time Mark walked in and we talked with him, followed by Gavin, then Dino, and then Drew REALLY late. We had the privelege of hearing them soundcheck; just me and my friend and the other bands and sound people there. A couple floor monitors were blown but they made the best of it.

Anyway, doors open. We sit up front. The Launchpad is a really intimate venue that feels close but comfortable. The Pale Pacific took the stage, and I was impressed. Indie, dissonant at times, melodic throughout. I bought the cd out of pure respect.

Circa Survive came on next. Wow. AMAZING show. Such energy, and the musicianship of that band is just astounding to me. The guitarists are unreal, the riffs they write just sound so good. Anthony had his great stage presence and the crowd just ate it up. The best way for me to say it is this; you couldn't tell whether the crowd was there for Pale, Circa, or Dredg. Thats how much love was in the room for every act.

Finally, dredg comes on. Setlist (out of order in places but these were played):

    Symbol

    Same Ol' Road

    Ode to the Sun

    Bug Eyes

    It Only Took A Day

    Sanzen

Not That Simple (requested by us earlier and played as a result)

    Triangle

    Sangreal

    Tanbark

    Jamais Vu

    The Ornament

    Of The Room

    Canyon

    Yatahaze

    90 Hour Sleep

That looks about right to me. Lots of funny things happened throughout the show, including stopping right before of the room to walk to the bar and get shots and then walk right back up on the stage. They said they appreciated the "mature crowd." I'll elaborate more later.

Anyway, hung out with the band afterwards, went to eat with Pale and Circa as dredg had to hit the road early. Again, great guys. Hilarious. And damn good at throwing food and @#%$ across a room.

    Some things you may be interested in. The current van is a rental, according to Rodney. The plans for the future are;

    Finish this tour

    Go overseas and play there

Come back and do another HEADLINING tour

Tour again (Drew said most likely opening for Coheed & Cambria and the Blood Brothers, although its not set in stone). We talked with Rodney, the tour manager, for a long time. He's a very good guy and said that himself and everyone at the label could see dredg going big, and how much they are all going to hate playing huge arenas. He noted that the band loves playing small places, but the time is coming where they need to get to more ears. He also said that after they come back from Europe they WILL have a bus, finally. Drew told me that was never going to happen and to not believe Rodney. Whatever.

Talked with Mark and he said they already have ideas for the next record. He noted that they went into the studio with the specific intention of creating an album that was a balance between Leitmotif and El Cielo, and I told him they succeeded fully. He said they were very proud of it and understood that some people didn't like it, but that it was simply one part of who they were and that if people are willing to hold on and wait, they will be surprised by the next stuff. He said that the next album will "most likely be the most complex stuff we've done so far."

After tonight, these guys can do whatever the hell they want as far as I'm concerned. They truly are amazing.

i love the part with mark. anything else he said since i have no doubt that they have done more than a little thinking about the next album? (so much time has gone by since they wrote for catch without arms)

and why not stick to 1,000-2,000 capacity places...dredg in an arena would be....not nearly as enjoyable.

I think dredg in an Arena would be good for the visual and financial aspects. I remember talking with Gavin a few years ago about the choir in "The Canyon Behind Her" and he talked about how he would love it if one day they had unlimited funds (or at least just a lot of money) and could actually have a choir perform it with them live. I think they would be good at stuff like that, making it so that its still phenomenal.

Really, a lot of my conversation with Mark had to do with why people are reacting the way they are to this record. He said that people got used to dredg being a no faced band that wouldn't ever get on the radio or something because thats what they wanted to do to get started out; focus on the music and have people just find out about them to build a fan base. But there has to be a transition, he said, because somewhere along the line they have to support their living and they have to able to justify the expense for the record company. He noted that its interesting that people get frustrated at bands for changing; the best bands society has seen have changed sounds drastically (he noted how Pink Floyd was different for every record, and the Beatles spanned all kinds of sounds throughout their time). But he also said that he generally has faith in people that listen to their music for being mostly open minded and able to see the point and purpose in approaching each album with a different mindset. He said that if people are convinced this is the way dredg will sound for the rest of their career then they'll just be surprised with everyone else after the next record.

It really amazes me when I realize that dredg has managed to successfully avoid any type of "sophomore slump" or anything like that simply because they aren't the same band on any two records. Different values and ideas go into every record so different rules apply for each.

          Great posts everyone! Very exciting!

Personally, I often find myself suprised that the band has only three full length records. There is little to no filler material on any of the three full length albums. With El Cielo, the album seems so much longer than an hour (in a good way). Their music is so dense and has so much for the listener to take in and yet no one album sounds like the other but still manages to sound like dredg.

I am particularly excited to see and hear where the band goes from here!

...and I can't wait for next Monday's Seattle show! Whooooo!

Amazing review/information man. I appreciate it.

And if dredg ever did have the money to have the choir sing their part on Canyon for each show, I would seriously cry like a little girl. I would pay hundreds of dollars to see that.

Oh yea, one more thing. When this happened I knew I had to post about it because it was amazing.

So when we got there originally it was just the Circa guys, dredg was out on the town. So they started working with the PA to get it sounding the way it needed to. Mark walked in and we talked for a while, and then he got on stage and started working with his guitar. Meanwhile Anthony from Circa is walking in and out of the venue and stuff. So they start playing "Digital Bath" by the Deftones over the system to get a feel for it and isolate all the different speakers to see how they are and stuff. Mark is still working with his guitar, but he starts playing using a slide WITH the @#%$ song. Anthony walks by me and I hear him singing the damn song. This went on for like 5 minutes, hearing these amazing musicians add their voice and guitar to this amazing song.

A moment I will never forget.
