  • so, something happened in arizona yesterday

as you all probably know, but probably not gnomad, there was a shooting at a political event, and the news industry has gone crazy with the information about it. what think ye about this new media frenzy?
    ---
michael moore had an interesting comment in relation to the whole sarah palin graph thing. he had said something to the effect that if a moslim in detriot put up a political graph with cross hairs with a hit list on the internet, you can bet that he would be sitting in custody answering questions.

I just wonder how much Palin's rhetoric will change from this.

At least one Tea Party group wants to try and twist it in their favor: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/...hooting/69153/

There's a DHS memo out that suggests they believe he was in an extreme right wing group: http://gretawire.blogs.foxnews.com/l...as-the-target/

i saw the news reporting on him as a member of some far right groups, especially anti-immigration groups. gillfords was not perfect on (my view of) immigration, but she did oppose the racist nature of sb1070, so the anti-immigration thing fits.

i watched olbermann's piece on it, and it was interesting. but i fundamentally question the nature of a shift in rhetoric without a shift in praxis. i am not against stopping people from using this type of violent imagery in this way, but i am against masking US policy. let us not delude ourselves. we have been a country that has benefited from violence since 1607 (the founding of jamestown), and other, albeit seemingly nonviolent, imagery participates in this whole issue--e.g., rhetoric of the frontier, pioneers, etc. it is so ingrained that we cannot separate it from our so-called democracy, courtesy of the bretton woods conference (which did away with GATT in favor of WTO). this is not an aberration of US policy. rather this is, as malcolm said upon hearing the news of JFK's assassination, chickens coming home to roost. that being said, any time olbermann wants to read me a bedtime story i'm game.

Yes, but when you have someone that could have been VP and might be President posting messages telling people to "reload" and target people that disagree with them, that's dangerous territory.

my beef with olbermann, who claims himself to be against violence, is simply that he is not looking deep enough, and treating it on a very, very superficial level. i do think palin should have never used those terms, especially in politics. however, it is not just about changing language.
          ---
and i think that michael moore's comment is of merit. if palin was a moslim, would she be in custody right now?

If she were, whomever is hypothetically in her current position would be calling for her to be.

did you hear the sheriff's remarks about arizona becoming a mecca for prejudice and bigotry? there is something unnerving about him using the term mecca, but he has a point. arizona is going nuts.

er, i guess you did since you posted that the atlantic article.

It was a poorly chosen word, but it does describe the situation there.

i guess the "disneyland for prejudice and bigotry" would also fit, but would also be rather inappropriate.

Yeah, Disney Land and murder don't usually go well together. Unless it's done by wildebeests.

the moment your academic institutions carry as much weight as american ones. that's the major area europe is still behind.

                          why do you say that?

Thanks, dick, hahaha. So what exactly happened... I hate the internet when it comes to shit like this, cause all I find is articles talking about a certain aspect of the event, but not the event itself.

a dude, and probably dudes, came to one of congresswoman giffords' political events and opened fire. the shooter killed five people, including a 9 year old child that has the dubious honor of being born on 9/11 and a federal judge. giffords was shot in the head, an apparent "through and through." subsequently, we have learned that surgeons do watch CSI and have conformed to using CSI imagery to explain shooting injuries.
