anyways, my dad is cool because we were talking about nuclear war. He said everyone pictures nuclear warfare as like all these nations setting off bombs and the earth melting or something but he said most likely what an advanced society would do with nuclear technology, in order to damage another country, would be to like set the bombs up off in the atmosphere somewhere and something to do with a gamma radiation reaction wiping out electricity in whole countries. We also talked about cool shit having to do with the activity in the sun and how it's really low right now, lower than it's been since the 1800's and in the 1800s when the solar activity was this low, upon wakening back up the activity was so intense it did some shit with the earth's magnetic fields or whatever that caused some kind of energy to build up in metal cables and some shit caught fire. And he thinks if that happens again, potentially more shit will catch fire since we have more of that stuff nowadays.

It sounds like a bunch of nonsense for me to talk about it but he's a pretty famous electromagnetic engineer dude so i think he knows his shit and it's fun to talk to him about.

well apparently there is an idea that they might be used primarily to cripple a civilization by wiping out electricity rather than directly killing people? I guess because it has a greater range for wiping out electrical equipment than for killing people.
