  • Mike Portnoy leaves Dream Theater

Well, I know Portnoy and the band take shit around here, but I suspect there are at least a few fans of the band. It's pretty shocking to be honest, as a fan of Dream Theater for over 15 years to actually read this.

it almost feels like if any of the 4 members of dredg left, or maybe even if the band broke up.

      OH NO!

That means he might be tainting other bands with his complete lack of taste and groove!

Good news that they're not breaking up though, I'd hate for them to taint FIVE other bands with their wankery

          As if they needed tainting.

I have much respect for Portnoy and all the other members of DT except LaBrie. I would love to see more Transatlantic. They are really great.

He alone brings an undeniable level of cheese to the band. Labrie, that is.

I have a lot of respect for portnoy too. He seems like a great guy, and he's a very technically skilled drummer.
              But he's a horrible musician

              And yeah, fuck labrie

Joking aside, this band hasn't been relevant in a long time. Not to mention that while all of them are EXTREMELY talented musicians, they're all some of the worst songwriters I've ever heard. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I'm sure I'm being a jerk when I say that for me, life went on like nothing happened. Cause for me, nothing happened.

I still think their first album (Images and Words) is pretty good..
But then they had Kevin Moore, and Kevin Moore is an amazing songwriter

Images and Words was their 2nd album actually.

Gnomad, they haven't been relevant in a long time. What exactly do you refer to? You mean their new music/albums not being influential? Because actually they haven't been more visible/popular from a mainstream/commercial standpoint than of late. Their last album opened up at #6 on the Billboard 100 actually (they've never had any album close to that high). And actually in terms of influence, you could look at the whole boom of technical metal and technical death metal (or newer forms of prog metal) having a lot to do with their influence. You could say a band like Opeth and more recently Between the Buried and Me have had a lot to do with that, but both of those bands take a lot of influence from them. More so, their older/earlier work (90's), but I've noticed a lot of bands/musicians mention Train of Thought as an influence or favorite of theirs.

First, fans of this band are few and far between. Second, in terms of talent, I'm sure they're very influential. However, who a band lists as an influence couldn't matter less when I hear bands say shit like "Oh, Pink Floyd is a big influence on me." and then they put out a song called "Bat Country". And third, let's be fair, Korn still releases albums pretty high on the charts. I know you wouldn't call them relevant.

                              They're relevant to some.
