Freddie Freeman doesn't fear any stupid beard.

But Wilson looked like he was really hurting out there.

RIP Rick Rypien. The Ripper and the Boogeyman both die in the same year. Both probably to drugs and depression.

The Giambino brings the magic back to LoDo, unfortunately couldn't be at 20th and Blake tonight.
How many dredg fans does it take to change a lightbulb?

Seven. One to change it, five to complain that the old one was better, and one talk about Gavins weight.

Giambino. First time I have ever heard that. Gives me the chuckles.

I heard some commentators really chiding Thome the other day, stating that his chances for the Hall were slim. That would be really disappointing, and not just for Ars' autograph collection investment.

That's absolutely ridiculous. He's never once been linked to steroids. But he has always been underrated. If he had played in NY or Boston, he'd have won 2 or 3 MVP awards.

that is ridiculous. Thome is a Hall of Famer all the way, no doubt about it. Probably won't be first ballot but he's been the quiet assassin. If it wasn't for Renteria, he'd have a world series ring. He deserves one. He's a class act. In my opinion, even if it eventually came out that he was linked to steroids... it wouldn't matter in my book. Dude's a classic ball player through and through.

Yeah, it would be a tragedy. If you hit 600 hrs and you have never been linked to drugs, then you deserve the HoF.

Also, what is up with this NCAA off season?

Also, Invesco's new name is terrible.

I detest this whole idea of paying college players to play. Whatever happened to getting a free education as the reward for playing?

agreed about Invesco. In my utopia it would just be Mile High Stadium. oh and the broncos would win

I will just refer to it as Mile High. And I would love it if the Broncos could win again. At least McDaniels is gone. But he left behind many of his poor choices....

I also detest the insane amount of money the NCAA, colleges, and ESPN make on the backs of college athletes, most of whom don't even get scholarships.

I am really interested in the intersection of NCAA and race. Most universities in the US have a problematic relationship with slavery, and benefited from cheap lands taken from Native Peoples. It is no secret that many sports teams are filled with African American players, and capitalize off these players. I forget the current racial demographics of ADs, the NCAA, and coaches, but they have historically been all white. So you do have a bunch of white folks making a killing off of a uniquely racial system.

Also, if y'all can find it, I highly recommend HBO's Breaking the Huddle. I have only been able to find one copy of it, a bootleg, and it was damaged badly.

Indeed. I think someone is going to make a movie based on the book "These Guys have all the fun." Could be interesting.

Your comments about race and college athletics are also very interesting. One thing I think is fascinating is the way that the NFL operates, especially in terms of labor and race. The collective bargaining power of the players (majority black) has earned them what is arguably a fair percentage of overall income ($9+ billion) in comparison with the owners (almost entirely white). Yet, the very nature of the business is rife with racial tensions, especially how certain players are marketed (or market themselves) and the manner in which their bodies are manipulated and exploited. I'm sure academic papers and dissertations have been written on these topics...or if not, they should be.

I have not really payed much attention to the current bargaining agreement, and I have very mixed feelings regarding the NFL. I read the book Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete and it really tarnished the NFL for me. There are a few historians, more in the Annales school of thought, who deal with the NFL. Most of these historians do not really deal with race, and that domain is left to the journalists. Not there there is anything wrong with reading a journalist. Interestingly, there is a big embrace of NASCAR by historians.

There could be more historians writing on the NFL than I know. It is pretty outside of my area.
