ocd, add, and bipolar are the most self diagnosed diseases ever....

specially since all these television shows have come out on A&E.

Its called personality... unless you've been diagnosed by a doctor and take meds.

Im not saying dsv or auto-de-fe are those kinds of people... it just irritates me that i hear that from everyone.

So many of my friends in college blamed their needy, crazy, bitchiness on being bipolar that I've practically stopped hanging around straight girls for good. Chick Drama. bleh.

I remember when the "diagnosis" for hyperactivity (now called, ADD) became popular in the 70s, and parents began drugging their kids. I was a talkative, easily excited, active kid and my mother took me to the doctor to see is I was "hyperactive." The doctor talked with me for awhile and refused to drug me. He told my mom that I wasn't hyperactive, but simply a "vivacious, outgoing" kid.

To this day I can't believe my mom wanted to put me on drugs simply because she didn't want to deal with me. I don't resent it; I'm just surprised by it. I'm also really glad that doctor was responsible enough not to put me on drugs.

Ya know...I never got that whole ADD and ADHD thing. They just seem like normal people too me, maybe more energetic than the average person, but that's about it. Crunchy pubes.

i think this gets into a more philosophical argument surrounding notions of normativity and the myth of the abled-bodied person (i have begun a foray into disability studies and it has been very interesting).

Exactly! I wasn't a "normal" child compared to other kids. (For that matter I'm not a normal adult, but I hang around a bunch of other weirdos, so it's not an issue anymore.)

But that's why my mom and dad were bothered by me. I wasn't like other female kids who were happy playing with dolls (bored me), or who watched TV (fun, but not for hours, come on!), or who minded their manners (I've never been able to do that). My parents were constantly telling me I was "bad" or spanking me or otherwise criticizing my personality, simply because they wanted me to be a different kind of person. And I tried, but it was inevitably impossible.

But they didn't think of drugging me until it became popular, or at least not stigmatized. When that was "normal," they checked it out.

By the way, my parents are coming off badly here, and I don't mean for them to. I'm not typing this all teary-eyed or with resentment. Looking back, I was a handful. I'm still a handful, but it's not an issue anymore, because I think I'm awesome and I'm with someone who's up to the challenge.

totally agree... actually my gf is majoring in biology and she's taking alot of courses about the immune system and neurological responses and such. It really is really really interesting stuff.

Also not so much the written and proven scientific stuff, but the like you said... alot of beliefs of what being normal really is. I mean, who's really to say who needs help and who doesn't. Who draws the line between letting someone be themselves and being a danger to themselves and society. Its all very argumentative.
