  • Taper Help.....

I go to too many shows to not film. Im tired of using my iphone camera for pictures and would like to capture video also. Im planning on purchasing a pocket sized compact digital camera (makes sneakn it in easy). I would like to get a camera that would shoot in HD and wouldn't capture distorted audio. I really have no clue as too what would be best in my situation.

im looking at this one : http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-e...00000000005702

random question: Is it possible to hook up an external mic (if it helps)?

    Thanks!

I use a really small JVC and it works great, and it has an audio muffler so it doesnt sound all distorted when you record in a loud small venue.

The problem with a lot of HD cams is they're overly concerned about the video and not really at all concerned about the audio. My camera has FANTASTIC video and HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE audio.

Cameras that have an external mic jack usually cost a LOT more, because there's a bottleneck point where they know certain features are important to hardcore video people who will be willing to pay a lot more, and mic jacks are usually at that point. But with digital video you don't really need to record your audio with the same device - moving to DV basically eliminates synchronization issues with regard to devices running at slightly different speeds. If you have the software to combine separate audio and visual information (and the patience to synchronize it by hand), that's definitely the way to go IMO.

Of course, at a concert, it might be tough to be using two devices. If you can get an mp3 player or something with decent digital record and give that to a friend, then use a nice HD cam with crappy audio, you'll be able to make some sweet stuff. Less convenient but much less expensive.

You could look for a camcorder with AIS (active interface shoe). They allow for various bits to be attached the camera, like additional microphones (which I guess you'll want if you want better audio quality).

For example, Sanyo camcorders. Cheap, HD, AIS - BANG FOR YOU MUTHAFUCKING BUCK!

do yourself a favor and get an actual camcorder over a digital camera with the option to record. if you go the route you are planning, what you will end up with is a video from a show that is very shaky. you wont want to watch it more than once, because it might just give you motion sickness, especially if you zoom. i got a decent camcorder for about this same price. it was not HD but it does the trick.
