I like this as a first step. It's hard to argue with as well. Hopefully there aren't any speedbumps along the way for this piece of legislation. Of course, this board is known for seeing through bullshit. So, anyone reading between the lines?

I agree with it, but there are issues with it as well. When you start making mandates, you leave open the possibility of reverse discrimination. They better be really careful with their wording. Otherwise, you remove career incentives, which will definitely hurt productivity.

Some people are better at jobs than others so they deserve better pay. Pay should be based on productivity though, not gender, race, sexuality, etc, etc.

i mean, it was one thing when we were discriminating blacks heavily back in the day. But this is kind of a more quieter subject. I dont know how he would tackle that...

You have to report all financial information on employee salary. If there's a nasty penalty involved, which there probably will be, and it looks suspicious, someone is going to force you to change the situation. All it takes in a large corporation is for the legal or human resources departments to notice something and warn the higher ups that this could cost them. They will fix it, despite what the situation calls for. It's cheaper to pay someone a little more than to deal with the financial penalties. Also, if you can get away with it, it's even easier to fire someone. That won't happen as much, but yeah. You can control the way people treat others. The people ultimately in charge don't give a shit, if a problem is brought to their attention along with the consequences, it'll get changed that day the cheapest and easiest way it can. You don't typically want a potential problem you caused getting that high up the chain, you know?

yeah but there are plenty of organazations and companies that arent large enough to even be looked at by anyone.

Yeah, that's why this legislation isn't geared toward those companies. This most likely will not affect any of us. It's not like they're going to start regulating who gets paid what at the McDonalds down the street. That's a completely different situation that revolves more around seniority and merit. In larger companies(hospitals, law firms, financial firms, government, etc.), this is a problem. Generally, those people are supposed to make the same amount of money. Seniority and merit are less important in these jobs because these people have gone to school for years for the position. Going above and beyond is expected, not rewarded. Serving large amounts of time is expected, not rewarded. When you are rewarded, it's usually a promotion.

Anyway, yeah. It's obviously not clear cut for most people and most won't even have to consider this in the long run. Still, for everyone this will affect, this sounds like a good deal. Or, a bad one if you're misogynistic.
