Anyone see this film? What did you think?

It's written and directed by Richard Kelly, the writer and director of Donnie Darko.

Personally I thought the film was great. I don't want to give away any plot details, but the plot may be a little hard to follow on the first watch because there are three graphic novels that are meant to be a prequel to it, and the film starts on Chapter IV.

Also it got horrible reviews, and was sort of a flop in the box office, but it is supposedly turning into somewhat of a cult classic.

saw the movie at blockbuster the other day, decided against it because of timberlake. Also, the movie had the feeling of so many stars, scrambled plot. I got anthony hopkins directed movie called "slipstream" which was horrible.

But in the previews for that movie, there was one for Southland Tales. The movie has SOOO many stars. Even the people that seem like they might have two lines in the movie are people like Cheri Oteri. lolol. Seems interesting cuz i loved donnie darko. But looks like its a gamble. Plus i hate the fact that Justin timberlake gets movie roles. He's such a bad actor.

Just saw this yesterday... Let me start by saying Donnie Darko is prolly in my top 5 of all times, So I had high hopes. I had heard that it got booed at cannes and was trashed by critics, so i tried to watch it nuetrally....

Overall- Thumbs down. I think some of the cinematography(sp) is beautiful and visualy stimulating. I respect how he tries to tackle alot of issues, and while it worked in Darko, I think it failed miserably here. He had alot of pressure on him to make this movie after Darko, and instead of making a good well rounded film, he shot for the moon and fell short. I think one of the things that ruined it for me was the Dialouge.  He ruined so many scenes with the cheesy-ass horrible dialouge. "Have a Nice Appocalypse!" which is kinda cool is followed directly with the pointless" No one Rocks the Cock like Krista Now"... WTF.  I appreciate his ambition, but my feeling is he tried wayyyy to hard.

The script was written shortly before 9/11 and was revised after.

"[The original script] was more about making fun of Hollywood. But now it's about, I hope, creating a piece of science fiction that's about a really important problem we're facing, about civil liberties and homeland security and needing to sustain both those things and balance them." -Richard Kelly

So keep in mind that it's still meant to be satirical.

there isn't anything wrong with the dialogue.  it makes perfect sense in the context of the movie.  also, don't forget it is  a comic book movie.

i'm convinced this should have been a trilogy.

so much plot, so many issues.  plus, an entire prequel novel.  you thought there was plenty to analyze in donnie darko?  this one doesn't even compare...

                  satire.

pimps are considered the "heroes" in american culture.  the characters that use the phrase in the movie are the heroes/messiahs of the story.

it's all a futuristic take on the book of revelation.

Hmmm... I should give this film a shot as someone who thought Donnie Darko was garbage.

the word pimp has taken on a positive connotation in recent years in our culture.  much in the same way gay has gone from a positive word to a negative word.  i think this is where the satire comes in.  it's not cheesy, it's supposed to make you feel awkward.  pimp isn't quite an acceptable compliment quite yet, but it's getting close.  gay is even closer.

the thing is is that anyone can make anything sound like it should make sense.

But to me, the explanation sounds more ridiculous than the actual line. Sounds like a corny movie to me... and if its supposed to be or not, it dosent matter to me.
