how long has it been since you've seen them use that typeface for anything??

approximately a long time.

otherwise clean designs, but my other issue is that maybe they're too clean?

Hello guys, check the the design that won the contest. She is from Chile, my girl, and I love the design, I hope you enjoy this and buy the tshirt on the tour .

Here you can see the full pics on full size (design, logo and t shirt samples) I know the logo is from a font called "austral" a personal font, designed by herself.
