Recording a song is way more than just "playing it correctly"
You can get it a lot tighter, recording the tracks separately

I don't know about you, but if I spent bucketloads of money on recording a cd, i'd want it to sound as perfect as fucking possible

Almost every single one of Incubus' records were tracked live, and I'm pretty sure that it's not that rare. They will almost certainly go back and do overdubs, but this is still considered tracking live.

It still seems goofy. If you've already taken the time to record it correctly once, why take time to record it 4-5 more times correctly and then the time to put the 4-5 pieces together?

If you're recording it live, you get some things that will be different. A fill that worked better, or an extra note, delay trails, facebook details, stomach growls... It's sorta like writing a song too, i guess. You get to figure it out as you go along. Kinda, the whole, not setting a song in stone - let it do whatever etc.

I'm loving the way the guys were into it.... and the drum groove is killer. Popped, like, 17 boners.

I'm not saying it's rare. My point is that this video doesn't tell us much about how the album is being recorded

I would bet it is rare. Of the bands that I am actively aware of their recording style, the only one I know that tracked live was The Chariot. And that may have only been on their debut.
