Re: Album Discussion: Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy
I actually think the artwork is a much larger focus on this record specifically because the music is less of a focus. TPTPTD was practically the exact opposite. It’s funny some people here will accuse the band of trying too hard and others will accuse them of not trying hard enough.
It can’t be stated enough that this record pretty much breaks out of almost every pattern the band has held to in recent releases. No one should feel obliged to support it or hate it, necessarily, but I also think that it’s short sighted to expect the same product from a much, much different process. This is a band that put years of effort into the last three records it released. They wrote this one via email and recorded it in a couple of days. There are a total of 8 original songs on it, two of which we’ve heard in the past in some form. So really, 6 fresh songs, directly influenced by Dan the Automator challenging the band to move past their perfectionist tendencies and let the songs be what they are.
Call it boring, call it uninspired, call it the wrong approach. Everyone has an opinion and it’s certainly all valid. But I just think the context behind all of this is being missed by most people, and I think more people will get more out of the record by factoring that context in to their listening experience. Just my perspective.
