  • Finding new music

Hey all, where do you guys go to find new-y prog-y music nowadays? I used to come here for a lot of suggestions, but there must be some site out there that talks about current prog without poring over steven wilson's stuff 24/7...

I've discovered approximately one good band in a year. it sad.

    I suppose I should share:

From the album "Heretics" - 2014Follow Dream The Electric Sleep across social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DTESBANDInstagram: https://www.instagr...

I love Dream the Electric Sleep. They have a new album expected this year and they worked with Rush producer Nick Raskulinecz.

I suppose other than maybe scanning my blog (http://allmediareviews.blogspot.com , Or Twitter, Facebook and even a YouTube Channel, lol), which I do talk about Steven Wilson of course, but amongst a lot of other prog.

I would suggest another similar type of blog, http://altprogcore.blogspot.com Although this blog is in Italian, but I usually use Google Translator.

      Re: Finding new music

Well, i am not that much into Prog rock music, but in general i find it hard to find new music that bring sth original to the table and/or fit my subjective taste.

You could check out Sleeping Pulse (Side project of Antimatter's Mick Moss, if that rings a bell): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qz6JcPfqb8

And Anathema are still very dear to my heart. Wouldn't call them Prog but they seem to be put into that category at times.

Check out some of their latest Album here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcTS0tJTiLc

Also many Prog Fans' seem to like 'The Riverside'. I only enjoy one song, but maybe that's sth you find appealing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rCMFzSdoOk

Oh, and be sure to check out Karnivool if haven't already.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

One of you kind gentlemen helped me with a what.cd invite years back, but that site has gone bye bye. Does anybody have a Redacted or Apollo invite by chance?

I use sites like this to find new music since conventional means fall flat... then when I find a band I like I throw money at them like a desperate fanboy..

Now defunct, but The Baltic Sea was a fantastic band, kind of like Yes meets Cave In with more post-rock elements or something. Their second and final album, Period Piece is my favorite.

Anything in the family tree of projects that came out of The Coma Lilies, a rad instrumental band out of Santa Rosa. All their members are prolific AF. Some highlights:

            The Coma Lilies: https://thecomalilies.bandcamp.com/

Guitarist Hunter Ellis solo stuff, featuring most of the CL members: https://hunterellis.bandcamp.com/alb...er-of-laughter

            Drummer Gabe Katz' stuff: https://gabekatz1.bandcamp.com/

Horders, the current project of their bassist and drummer, a little more stripped down: https://www.facebook.com/Hordersband/

Cash Pony: Gabe's other main band, kind of a 70s prog/Mahavishnu vibe: https://cashpony.bandcamp.com/

I trawl through http://kingdom-leaks.com and do a bit of try-before-I-buy there *cough*! I just cross check the genre and whether I'd like to dabble in that and go from there, they post bandcamp/physical links and YouTube vids so you can check it out before downloading.

Getting more legal: http://boards.vinylcollective.com/ is good for discussion and finding out about latest releases.

I know a lot of people use Spotify/Apple Music as it creates recommendations based on what you listen to, but I don't want to be locked into streaming services so it's not something I can chat about, but maybe give that a shot too?

I've been loving King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard lately. Also, not sure if he's been mentioned, but Jonathan Wilson is fantastic.
I don't have the time it takes to recover from the day
I sit and moan and mope and groan and never have my say
A crown of thorns from which is born a little baby bird
To fly away and have its day is nothing but absurd

Cool. Feel free to invite people you know on FB who might be interested. No real genres. Anything people like and want to discuss or suggest is fair game. It's just supposed to be a place to show a love of music.
