Auto, I know you're kidding around, but I have to give your statement a serious answer. I love that fucking show because the characters are pathetic. But they don't know it. Even Jim and Pam are pathetic people. Sure they think they're hip and cool and they're fucking now so they're "happy," but the writing subtly tells us otherwise. The characters on this show are happy because they ask so little of life. And that's pathetic.

Michael is so damn heartbreaking because he has an inkling that he IS pathetic, and it scares the hell out of him so he denies, denies, denies, and we sit in fear that he might figure it out one day. We don't want him to, because as horribly stupid (and even mean) as he can be at times, he's still an endearing person, however small. They all are.

The Office is replete with pathos. Its characters are the fucking human condition. They break our hearts and make us laugh at the same time. It's Cathartic. Their not knowing just how pathetic they are, while we do, is what makes it so good.

You probably know all of this, but you said you didn't understand its appeal, so I'm just putting it out there.
