Student loan "system"? We can borrow money from the government, at a mostly reasonable rate, but if we don't pay it back we're fucked. If we default, we're fucked. They'll go after your social security, and forget getting any credit anywhere. There used to be grants available, and I think they're still there for very low-income people.
