What are some PROS and CONS of compulsory school attendance?
Here's what I've got so far:
PROS: 1. The state is providing education to the population.
2. These laws “demonstrate societal recognition of the importance of education in a democratic society.” In today’s society, education is highly valued. By imposing mandatory attendance laws, states are ensuring that individuals partake in the academic process.
3. Education provides individuals with opportunities to learn basic concepts and skills that are important. It also allows for socialization and self-actualization.
4. Because there are constant changes in family structure, societal standards, and technological advancements, it is important for children to attend school.
5. Education prepares a person for future opportunities.
6. Nonattendance has various negative intellectual and psychological effects on children.
CONS: 1. Compulsory school attendance laws were created in reaction to child welfare in regards to dangerous working conditions in the 1900s. Our current society is obviously different.
2. “Academic education provided by schools” is not the only factor that influences a person’s social + intellectual development and success potential.
3. There are other informational outlets (i.e. mass media, Internet) that a child can utilize.
4. Enforcing mandatory attendance does not reflect the views of a free society.
5. Compulsory attendance laws do not take into consideration the various discrepancies among schools (i.e. funding, equipment, materials, staff members).
6. Mandatory attendance does not reflect student motivation and achievement OR the quality of the education.
