  • Research Paper

I'm doing my research paper for English class on:

"How did the Civil War affect Georgia?"

I've got my final "rough draft" due tomorrow, and the final draft/presentation due Wed. I was hoping for some different thoughts from some of you guys. I like getting different ways to look at this paper, other than from my own biased view.

So, what would you find interesting about this topic? What would you want to know/learn from it? What do you know about it?

    Thought/Opinions/Comments - All welcome.

Well... that war disallowed cotton picking in georgia by terribly underpaid colored folks (terribly paid as in not paid at all)... but then it really didnt stop. So some people got in trouble for making some colored folks pick some cotton. Then alot of farmers and such had a hard time because they couldn't pick cotton at the same rate that it was being picked before. So im guessing cotton prices went through the roof. Only in georgia tho.

    whattya think?

      Re: Research Paper

Well there was that whole "Sherman marching through Atlanta" thing.

      And Twelve Oaks was razed.

But Melanie was OK because Scarlett took her with her to Tara. Reconstruction was difficult and it was hard for many to pay the taxes on their plantations and Scarlett had to steal her own sister's boyfriend!

Belle Watling seemed to do just fine.

And the black folk sure loved their owners more than those carpetbagger Yankees, and they stayed on with Scarlett and helped her never be hungry again.

By the way, you damn Yankee, it was called "The War of Northern Aggression" in Georgia.

argue that words have no referentiality outside of linguistics and, therefore, we cannot prove that there ever was a civil war. bless those poststructuralist postmodernists

And now my serious response. :-)

What type of English class is this? Composition/Rhetoric? Southern Literature?

It's difficult to give an opinion or even ask a question because your topic is so broad. "Effect" in what way? Social? Economical? Racial? Demographics? Laws? Trade?

If I was going to read something on this subject, I'd mostly be interested in the civil rights aspect, and by that I mean that slavery didn't end in Georgia after the Civil War, or after emancipation, or even after Jim Crow. That's what I'd like to read. That's what most people need to know. Slavery remained in Georgia well into the 1960s. It just wasn't called "slavery."

Good luck on your paper, Shigeru!

Edited to add: I know your paper isn't on slavery. It's on the Civil War's effect on Georgia. But like I said: that's a pretty broad topic; thus, I've narrowed it.

War ---> slavery ---> no effect (a rose by any other name is still the same)

and some would say it continues in the united states and will more than likely continue throughout our lifetimes.

                    Re: Research Paper

This is for a basic 1102 class. It's a required course, and the research project and my topic are simply a "Hey, I'm interested in history, so..." The broad question is mainly just because I want a broad overview of it, because I admittedly HATE these sorts of papers. I much more enjoy creative writing.

I will touch on slavery some, and I would imagine most people would like to hear about that as well.

Thanks for all the responses. Even Erik!
