  • Dredg Plagirzed?

Ok I'm not very serious about this (as in dredg should not seek lawsuit), but I do believe I've found a song that rips off Dredg more specifically Planting Seeds and the part starting at 0:25. Now last night i seen this commercial for some new Cadillac, the music playing blew my mind because it sounded like a techno remix of that part of the song, or something. Anyways looked it up and found its by some French alternative band called Phoenix the song in question is called 1901, came out at the beginning of the year and did pretty good on the international charts.

So what do fellow dredg fans think of that? Ripoff, or another musical coincidence?

    Here's some links:
    1901:

And if you really need it (not likely) Planting Seeds:

Thought the same thing when I first heard that song / the opening riff of it. Although it reminded me more of Information than Planting Seeds.

Huge stretch. The only remotely similar thing is the guitar tone, which countless bands (mostly post-rock and recent indie bands) use. Hell, even the tone isn't that similar.

Well, the tone is at least similar enough to remind a couple of people of dredg instantly.

It reminds me of dredg, but I wouldn't call it anything near a rip-off. it's a good song though.

I hear it. I wouldn't call it a rip-off, though. It's just the tone of the guitar, really.

not really hearing it, anymore than a dozen or more other examples of bands having songs/parts-from-songs that sound like dredg songs.

The Porcupine Tree song "Halo" and "Sang Real" for example.

Well, to claim it 'reminds me of' is an entirely different and more understandable statement than 'rips off'. And if this reminds you of dredg more than *random post-rock band*, you probably haven't heard *random post-rock band*.

Also, countless bands have indeed blatantly ripped dredg off. Strata being the obvious example. At least most of them do it well.

I never claimed it was a rip-off. Also I don't think that guitar sound is typically post rock, it's more a common alternative / indie rock sound. It was the combination of that sound and the progression of the melody that reminded me of Information.

if that is what you think of when you think of post-rock, then you need to listen to more than just explosions in the sky.

explosions in the sky isn't a good representation of the entire genre of post-rock, even though they are misused as one.

Before making a stupid ass, misinformed comment such as this, you could have at least clicked on the link listed blatantly in my signature.

And as far as straightforward, modern post-rock goes, Explosions in the Sky are pretty much the standard representation for good reason.
