Stereokill: It’s been almost four years since the release Catch Without Arms. What’s been happening in the world of dredg since then?
DR: Well, dredg needed some personal time off from one other; it’s what keeps us sane. And we have been writing for the last three years, trying to locate what we think is our best material. We felt no need to rush our art.
Stereokill: In your own words, how would you describe The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion?DR: It is an outcast stranded on an island, with hopes clearing the delusions that mankind has built. It is a rock and roll record, filled with experimental journeys and eccentric jousts.
Stereokill: Lietmotif focused upon one man’s existential journey, El Cielo is loosely based on sleep paralysis and Catch Wihout Arms is divided into two “perspectives.” Is this new album also a conceptual piece?DR: The album is loosely inspired by a Salman Rushdie essay, entitled A Letter to the Six Billionth Citizen. We have decided to address ours to the seven billionth, who will be born around next June.
Stereokill: How does the new album differ from Catch Without Arms?DR: More production, more instrumentals; a seven layer nacho dip.
Stereokill: You’re releasing the album through the band’s newly created label, Ohlone Recordings. Can you discuss what happened with Interscope Records?DR: They let us go, like a girlfriend who no longer wants to sleep with you. We still send flowers, but our newly found freedom excites us and inspires us to reach beyond.
Stereokill: What do you make of the music industry these days? Does the band make its living mostly through live shows, or through record sales?DR: I think the record industry is doing well. Music is still being created. Art and sounds still thrive. Artists just need to think of more creative ways in which to be heard and seen.
Stereokill: Which of the band’s previous three albums are you most proud of?DR: All of the above.
Stereokill: Are there any dredg songs that you consider your favourites?DR: I love “Sang Real”. I love our new songs: “Pariah” and “Lightswitch”. I enjoy all of our instrumentals.
Stereokill: Who are your key influences?
DR: The anti god, Salvador Dali, Van Gogh, Roger Waters, Stephen Colbert, Man on Wire.
Stereokill: What are your favourite albums of all time?DR: Pink Floyd’s Animals, Bright Eyes’ Digital Ash and DJ Shadow’s Entroducing.
Stereokill: Can you recommend any upcoming artists to our readers?DR: Dark Heavens
.Stereokill: Finally, a question concerning the letter ‘d’. Does the band’s name begin with a lower case d (dredg), or with a capital D (Dredg)?
DR: lower case.
