  • Label Theory

We're all aware of the rumors of dredg and interscope's breakup, but they'll obviously still need a label to release their next release. Who should it be?

    How about Superball Music?

They're a new label that released Frames by Oceansize and has also signed Pure Reason Revolution and And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead?

    Check out their top friends.

SUPERBALL MUSIC (superballmusiclabel)'s profile on Myspace, the place where people come to connect, discover, and share.

Now obviously the Mars Volta and Muse are above dredg so it definitely doesn't make it obvious that dredg would sign to them. But it would indicate that should dredg really be label-less then wouldn't they be interested? I think they'd fit perfectly.

    Re: Label Theory

why would they need a new label?

auto-de-fe added 0 Minutes and 55 Seconds later...

i mean, ya, it will help. but, technically speaking, having a label is not essential, especially for bands more popular than dredg. true, dredg is not that popular.

      Re: Label Theory

A label takes care of a lot of things that would have to be done in house otherwise, like press outreach, booking, etc. Obviously every deal is different, but labels are broadly seen as good things.

Not necessary, but extremely useful and preferable to be a part of one. That was the general opinion of the last time we debated this, right?

Actually, I agree that they'd fit in well with Superball, based on some of the bands you listed.

            Re: Label Theory

it would be pretty tough for a band at dredg's level to try to handle all aspects of a record release themselves. pressing/distribution/etc.. is a lot of work.

i did not say that it wouldn't be difficult.

however, i am waiting for someone to posit a unified label theory.

The biggest advantage of working with a label is that they have signed deals with all digital channels of distribution. You can't just get your album up on iTunes with the flick of a wrist. iTunes, and other digital outlets, only work with specific companies with whom they have signed contracts with.

that would be awesome if it meant they could tour with oceansize.

you can get your album up on MiniNova with the flick of a wrist.

CDs are quickly becoming an extra step in the Music Collection -> Digital Player arena.. such a pain.

oh nevermind, i'm the fool then. i thought the point was that they were still listed and therefore still on the label.
